CODING-DECODING

A code is a signal. Coding has always been used to transmit messages in such a way that they are not ordinarily understood unless these are decoded. These messages can only be understood by the receiver if he has the ‘Code Key’ to decipher it. Thus, the ‘CODING DECODING’ test is given to judge the candidate’s ability to decipher the rule applied in coding. The coding is generally based on a alphabets and some times numerals are also used to code the messages. Though, all the methods of coding can not be identified but still the major formats of coding are as under :

Coding and Decoding can be classified into following types :

1. Coding based on Alphabet

2. Coding based on Numerals

3. Coding based on symbols and numerals :

4. Coding based on ‘Group of Words’

5. Coding based on Reasoning

TYPE 1 : CODING BASED ON ALPHBAET

1.1 Reversal of alphabets:

The alphabets of the word are reversed in such a way that the last letter is the code of the first letter. It is the easy format of the coding and it is the first thing to be looked when we look at coding. .

Ex. 1. In certain code language BREAKDOWN is written as NWODKAERB. How will TRIANGLES be written is that code language ?

(a) AIRTGNSEL             (b) SELGWTRIA  (c) AIRTNSELG   (d) SELGNAIRT  (e) None of these

Sol. The order of letters has been reversed in code. Following the coding given above, TRIANGLES will be coded  as SELGNAIRT.

1.2 Opposite Letters:

Ex. 2. In certain code COMBINE is written as XLNYRMV which of the following represents FLOWER in that code.

(a) UOLDVI (b) UOLENT (c) UOKDNH (d) UOKDNI ;

Sol. A persual of the word COMBINE and its coded word XLNYRMV combine with knowledge. We know X is opposite letter of C, L is opposite of O, N is opposite of M and so on. It shows that the coded word contains all the opposite letters. Keeping this is view, we know that FLOWER will be coded as UOLDVI.

1.3 Code Consisting of Precoding/Following Letter

Ex.3. In certain code language, “TEMPORARY” is written as “SFLQOQBQZ”. How would

“WONDERFUL” be written in the same code ?

(a) VPMEFQGTM (b)  VPMEESGTM  (c) XPMEEQGTM  (d) VPMEESEVK  (e) None of these

Sol.

We observe that letters are alternatively moved one place forward and one place backward and the letter in  the middle of the given word is not changed. Based on this observation we coded the word “WONDERFUL”  as “VPMEEQGTM”.  Therefore, answer is (e).

1.4 Jumbling of Letters

Ex. 4. In certain code language AUTHORITY is written as ‘YTUROHTIA’. How will DESIGNATE be

written is that code language ?

(a) ESENGATDI     (b) ESEGNITAD    (c) ESENGITAD    (d) ESNEIGTDA    (e) None of these

sol.

Therefore answer is (C).

Ex. 5. If HEALING is written as BFIKHOJ. How is BEDTIME written in that code?

(a) EFCSTNF    (b) EFCSFNJ     (c) EFCOFNS     (d) CFESFNJ      (e) None of these

Sol.

therefore, the answer is (b)

 1.5 Using additional alphabet

Ex.6. In 4-certain code DELHI is written as CEDFKMGIHJ. How is KOLKATTA written in that code ?

(a) JLNPKMJLZBSUSUZB                      (b) JLPNKMJLZBSUSUBZ

(c) JLPNKJMLZBSUSUBZ                      (d) JLPNKMJLZBSUUSBZ       (e) None of these of

Sol. We can observe that there are five letters in the word Delhi and it is coded in ten letters. It means two letters  has been used for every one letter used in the word ‘Delhi’. It can also be easily observed that for the letter D two letters C and E have been used. Similarly for the letter E the letter used are D and F. From this, we can conclude that preceding and succeeding letters have used code each leter.

Following this pattern of coding, we can code :

KOLKATTA as JUNPKMJLZBSUSUZB

Ex.7. In certain code PENCIL is written as OQDFMOBDHJKM then how is CHENNAI written as?

(a) BDGDIFMOMOZBHJ                      (b) BDGIDFMOMOZBJH

(c) BDGIDFMOMZOBHJ                       (d) BDGIDFMOMOZBHJ

(e) None of these

Sol. The given word pencil contains 6 letters and it-is coded with twelve letter word. It means for every given letter, two letters (viz proceeding and succeeding) have been used for coded form following this pattern,  Chennai will be coded as BDGIDFMOMOZBHIJ

1.6 Reducing two alphabets to one word

Ex. 8. If GAMBLE is coded as HOQ, how is DOCTOR coded in that language ?

(a) SXG                        (b) SWH           (c) SWF            (d) SWG           (e) None of these

Sol. The place value of G is 7 and the place value of A is 1. Then total of their place value Is 8 which is presented in the alphabet series. Similarly, place value of M is 13 and B is 2 then the sum is 15 which is represented by  O. The place value of L and E is 12 and 5 respectively and their sum total is 17 which is represented by Q in  the alphabet series. So the coded word is HOQ. Similarly we can code DOCTOR as under :

D          O         C          T          O         R

4          15        3          20        15        18

4+5=19,           3 + 20 = 23,     15 + 18=33 =33-26=7

S                                 W                             G

Therefore, the code is SWG

Ex.9. In certain code DOLLAR is written as S X S. How is INDUSTRIAL written in that code ?

(a) EGCID         (b) EGDID        (c) EGDIC         (d) EIGCD         (e) None of these

Sol. The place value of D is 4 and the place value of O is 15. Their sum is 19 which is represented by S. The place value of L is 12 so 12 +12 = 24 which is represented by X. Similarly the place value of A is | and place value of R is 18 and their sum is 19. The leters represents the 19th place value in alphabet series so both these letters are coded as a single letter S. ,

D          O         L          L          A          R

4          15        12        12        1          18

       19                     24                  19

         S                      X                    S  = SXS

following this coding, INDUSTRIAL can be coded as WYMAM.

1.7 Given two words and to find code for third

Ex. 10. If the word ‘NUMBER’ is coded as ‘EPRSAY’ and ‘SQUARE’ is coded as ‘NGPVYA’ then how doed code ‘MEMBER?’ ?

(a) RARSYA      (b) RRASYA      (c) RARSAY      (d) SARSAY      (e) None of these

Given letter Coding                             Given letter Coding

N  à E,                                                S  à  N

U à  P                                                 Q à G

M à R                                                 U à P

B  à S                                                  A à V

E à A                                                  R à Y

R à Y                                                   E à A

If we observe from the above table, M is coded as R, E is coded as A, B is coded as S. so the answer IS

RARSAY.

Ex.11. In a certain code lLinguage, RUSTICATE is written as QTTUIDBSD, how would STATISTIC be written in that code?

 (a) RSBUJTUHB           (b) RSBUITUHB            (c) RSBHUIRSJD           (d) TUBUITUMB

Sol. Clearly, the middle letter ofthe word remains unchanged in the code. Each of the first two and the last two letters of the word is moved one step backward, while each of the remaining letter is moved one Step forward to obtain the corresponding letters of the code.

so, the answer is (b).

Ex. 12. In certain code, BREAKTHROUGH is written as EAQUHRBRGHKT. How is DISTRIBUTION written in that code ?

(a) TISTBUONDIRI       (b) STTIBUONRIDI       (c) STTIBUDIONRI        (d) RISTTIBUDION

TYPE 2 : CODING BASED ON NUMERALS AND SYMBOLS

Ex. 1. 1f 24685 is coded as RKANO, 37912 is coded as BPSTR then how 7868143 will be coded ?

(a) PANATBK   (b) PNANTKB   (c) PNANTBK              (d) PANBTNK   (e) None of these.

Sol. As noted above we draw chart as under :

Coded: 2         4          6          8          5

Code   :  R        K          A          N          O|

and

Coded :  3        7          9          1          2

Code    :  B       P          S          T          R .

Because 7 is coded as P, 6 is coded as A, 8 is coded as N, I is coded as 7, 4 is coded as K and 3 is coded as B.   The answer is PNANTKB. Hence option (b) is the answer.

Ex.2. In a certain code, ‘SPRING’  is written as ‘#2%@4=’ and ‘GONE’ is written as ‘=74(c)’. How would  SIGN be written in the same code ?

(a) #@4 =        (b) 2@=4         (c) #@=4         (d) #%=4                      (e) None of these.

Sol.      S          P         R          I           N          G

 #         2          %         @         4          =

and

G          O         N          E

=          7          4          (c)

Therefore, .

S          I           G          N :

#          @         =          4

Hence option (c) is the answer.

Ex.3.  If MACHINE is coded as 19-7-9-14-15-20-11, how will you code DANGER ?

(a) 11-7-20-16-11-24 (b) 13-7-20-9-11-25     (c) 10-7-20-13-11-24   (d) 13-7-20-10-11-25

Sol. Clearly, every letter is assigned a numerical code obtained by adding 6 to the numeral denoting the position of that letter in the English alphabet.

Thus, A is coded as (1 + 6) i.e., 7, Bas (2+ 6) ie, 8,Cas(3 +6) ie, 9, ……M as (13 + 6) ie, 19,…….Z as   (26 + 6) re., 32.

Since D, A, N, G E, R are 4th, Ist, 14th, 7th, 5th and 18th letter in English alphabet, so their respective codes are (4 + 6), (1 + 6), (14 + 6), (7 + 6), (5 +6), (18+ 6) ie. 10, 7, 20, 13, 11, 24. So, the code for DANGER is  10-7-20-13-11-24 Hence, the answer is (c).

Ex.4. If E = 5, PEN = 35, then PAGE = ?

(a) 27               (b) 28               (c) 29               (d) 36

Sol. Clearly, putting A= 1,B=2,C =3, D=4, E=5,……M=13…… X =24, Y=25, Z=26.

We have :

PEN=P+E+N=16+5+14=35   So PAGE=P+A+G+E=16+1+7+5=29    Hence, the answer Is (c) .

Ex. 5. In each of the questions below, a group of numerals is given followed by four groups of symbols/letter combinations labelled (a), (b), (c) and (d). Numerals are to be coded as per the codes andconditions given below.

You have to find out which of the combinations (a), (b), (c) and (d) is correct and indicate your answer accordingly. If none of the four combinations represents the correct code, mark (e) as your answer.

Numerals        :           3          5          7          4         2          6          8          1          0             9

Letter/Symbol Codes :   *       B          E         A          @         F          K          %         R             M

Sol.

  1. The required code is BMR%K* Hence, the answer ts (b).
  2. 2. The last digit in the given number group is 0, which shall thus be coded as #, Choosing the individual codes for the remaining digits from the given table, we obtain the code for 713540 as E%* BAF. ,
  3. Hence, the answer ts (a). .
  4. 3. Clearly, each digit of the given number-group is to be coded by its individual letter/symbol code. :
  5. So, the required code is EFBRK@. Hence, the answer is (d).
  6. 4. Clearly, in the given number-group, both the first and last digits are even numbers. So, Each of them is to be coded as $. The remaining digits are to be coded with their respective codes from the given table. So, the required code is $KEFM$. Hence, the answer ts (d).
  7. 5. The first and last digits, both being odd numbers, each of them is to be coded as X so required code is   XFAK%X. Hence the answer ts (e).

TYPE 3 : CODE CONSISTING OF A GROUP OF WORDS

SOLVED EXAMPLES

Ex.1. Ina certain language, ‘Oka peru’ means ‘fine cloth’ ; ‘meta lisa’ means ‘clear water’ and ‘done lisa  peru’ means ‘fine clear weather’, which word in the language means weather ?

(a) peru           (b) oka                         (c) meta           (d) done.

Sol. In the first and third statements, the common code-word is ‘peru’ and common word is ‘fine’. So, ‘peru’ means ‘fine’. In the second and third statements, the common-code-word is ‘lisa’ and the common word is ‘clear’. So, ‘lisa’ means ‘clear’. ’

Thus, in the third statement, ‘lisa’ means ‘clear’ and ‘peru’ means ‘fine’. So, ‘dona’ means ‘weather’. Hence, the answer ts (d).

Ex.2. In a certain code language, ‘go for morning walks’ is written as ‘$*?#’, ‘good for health’ is written as ‘£2@” and ‘good to walk fast’ is written as ‘+@T #’, then what is the code for ‘health’ in that code language ?

(a) +                 (b) #                 (c) £                 (d) ?     (e) None of these.

Sol. In the first and second statements, the common code symbol is “?” and the common word is ‘for’, So, ‘?’  means  ‘for’. In the second and third statements, the common code symbol is *@* and the common word is ‘good’. So, *@” means ‘good’. Thus, in second statement, “£” means ‘health’. Hence, the answer is (c). :

Ex.3. In a certain code : ‘ing ping sing’ means ‘how are you’, ‘sing ring ding’ means ‘what about you’ and ‘ding fing ching’ means ‘what to do’, then how is ‘do’ written in this code language ?
