Distance and Directions

Questions based on Distance and Directions can only be solved if the students have a full grasp of directions. The First thing to remember is that there are four directions: These directions are given under.

Directions

JOINT DIRECTIONS

For the person standing in the area falling between

  • North and east direction is called North7East.
  • The area between South and East is called South-East
  • The area between North and West is called North-West
  • Similarly, the area between South direction and West direction is called South-West.
  • Every turn taken clockwise (CW) means taking a right turn and Anti-clock wise (ACW) turn means taking left turn.

RULES FOR DISTANCE AND DIRECTION

Turning By 900

Turning       45°

For Example

FINDING OUT DISTANCE

The student is generally expected to find out the distance between the starting point and the destination point. To find out the shortest distance between the two points i.e., starting point and the destination point. should draw the diagram, which shows actual path followed by the person, along with the distance travelled by him. Finally, the starting point and destination are joined by a straight line and distance is observed. For this we use Pythagoras theorem which is as follows:

SOLVED EXAMPLES

Direction (1-3): Read the following information carefully and answer the given questions.

A @ B means A is to the north of B at a distance of either 7m or 12m
A # B means A is to the west direction of B at a distance of either 5m or 14m
A $ B means A is to the south direction of B at a distance of either 7m or 12m
A & B means A is to the east direction of B at a distance of either 5m or 14m
A @& B means A is to the north-east of B
A $& B means A is to the south-east direction of B

  1. Statement

A@B, B#C, C$D@&A, D#E@F@&C, F@G$&C, G&H$C

In which direction is B with respect to H?
(A) North (B) East (C) North-East (D) North-West (E) None of these

  1. If distance between B and C is same as the distance between D and E and this distance is less than the distance between A and B. Point X Which is 5m north of point A then what is the total distance between X and E?
    (A) 10 m (B) 28 m (C) Either a or b (D) 5 m (E) 14 m
  2. What is the total distance between E and G?
    (A) 12 m (B) 17 m (C) 19 m (D) 21 m (E) None of these
  1. Correct option is: D 2. Correct option is: A 3. Correct option is: C

Ex.1. A man is facing west. He turns 45° in the clockwise direction and then another 180° in the same direction and then 270° in the anti-clockwise direction. Which direction is he facing now?

(a) South      (b) North-West       (c) West        (d) South-West

Sol. Clearly, then man initially faces in the direction OA. On moving 45° clockwise, he faces in the direction OB. On further moving 1 80° clockwise, he faces in the direction OC. Finally, on moving 270° anti-clockwise, he faces in the direction OD, which is South-West. Hence, the answer is (d)

Ex.2. Sapna moved a distance of 75m towards the north. She then turned to the left and walking for about 25m, turned left again and walked 80 m. Finally, she turned to the right at an angle of 45°. In which direction was she moving finally?

(a) North-East         (b) North-West       (c) South      (d) South-East         (e) South-West

Sol. Sapna started from A, moved 75m up to B, turned left and walked 25m up to C. She then turned left again and moved 80m up to D. Turning to the right at an angle of 45°, she was finally moving in the direction D i.e., South-West.  Hence, the answer is (e).
