If a and b are rational numbers and \(\displaystyle a+b\sqrt{3}=\frac{1}{{2-\sqrt{3}}}\) then a : b is equal to

(b) 2 : 1

(d) \(\displaystyle -\sqrt{3}:1\)

(e) 2 : 3

Answer for this MCQ on Ratio and Proportion is (b)

\(\displaystyle a+b\sqrt{3}=\frac{1}{{2-\sqrt{3}}}=2+\sqrt{3}\)

(After rationalising)

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) a = 2 and b = 1

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \)a : b = 2 : 1

33,630 are divided among A, B and C in such a manner that the ratio of the amount of A to that of B is 3 : 7 and the ratio of the amount of B to that of C is 6 : 5. The amount of money received by B is

Answer: (a)

A : B = 3 : 7

B : C = 6 : 5

A : B : C = 3×6 : 7×6 : 7×5 = 18 : 42 : 35

Sum of the ratios = 18 + 42 + 35 = 95

Therefore, B’s share = ₹ \(\displaystyle \frac{{42}}{{95}}\times 336630=14868\)

The third proportion to 0.8 and 0.2 is :

(a) 0.05

(b) 0.8

(d) 0.032

(e) 0.024

Answer: (a)

If the third proportional be x, then

0.8 : 0.2 : : 0.2 : x

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) 0.8 × x = 0.2 × 0.2

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) x = \(\displaystyle \frac{{0.2\times 0.2}}{{0.8}}=\frac{4}{{80}}=0.05\)

Alternately :

Third proportion = \(\displaystyle \frac{{{{b}^{2}}}}{a}=\frac{{{{{(0.2)}}^{2}}}}{{0.8}}\)

= \(\displaystyle \frac{{0.04}}{{0.8}}=0.05\)
