questions on ratio and proportion

Solve the following questions on ratio and proportion:

A sum of money is divided among A, B, C and D in the ratio of 3 : 5 : 9 : 13 respectively. If the share of C is ₹  2412 more than the share of A, then what is the total amount of money of B and D together?

(a) ₹ 4422

(b) ₹ 7236

(c) ₹ 6030

(d) ₹ 4824

(e) None of these

Answer: (b)

Solution for the Ratio and Proportion question is,

Let the original sum be ₹ x.

Sum of the Ratios = 3 + 5 + 9 + 13 = 30

C’s share = \(\displaystyle \frac{{9x}}{{30}}=\frac{{3x}}{{10}}\)

A’s share = \(\displaystyle \frac{{3x}}{{30}}=\frac{x}{{10}}\)

According to the question, \(\displaystyle \frac{{3x}}{{30}}-\frac{x}{{10}}=2412\)

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) \(\displaystyle \frac{{2x}}{{10}}=2412\)

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) x = 2412 × 5 = ₹ 12060

Therefore, Amount received by B and D together

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) ₹ \(\displaystyle (\frac{{(5+13)}}{{30}}\times 12060)=7236\)

The ages of Khushi and Jagriti are in the ratio of 5 : 8 respectively. After 8 years the ratio of their ages will be 3 :4 what is the difference in their ages?

(a) 16 years

(b) 8 years

(c) 10 years

(d) 12 years

(e) None of these

Answer: (e)

Let the present ages of Khushi and Jagriti be 5x and 8x years respectively.

After 8 years, \(\displaystyle \frac{{5x+8}}{{8x+8}}=\frac{3}{4}\)

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) 24x + 24 = 20x + 32

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) 4x = 32 – 24 = 8

\(\displaystyle \Rightarrow \) \(\displaystyle x=\frac{8}{4}=2\)

Number of employees in a factory decreases in the ratio of 8 : 7 and salary of employees increase in the ratio of 5 : 6. Find whether the total salary given to the employees is increased or decreased and in what ratio?

(a) 19 : 20, increased

(b) 20 : 19, decreased

(c) 19 : 21, increased

(d) 21 : 20, decreased

(e) None of the above

Answer: (e)

Let total number of employees in beginning = 8K and

Total number of employees in present = 7K

Let salary of an employee in beginning = 5l

and salary of an employee in present = 6l

Therefore, Total salary in beginning = 8K × 5l = 40Kl

and total salary in present = 7K × 6l = 42Kl

Required ratio = 40 KI : 42 KI = 20 : 21

Clearly, salary is increased.

Mr. X invested a certain amount in Debt and Equity Funds in the ratio of 4 : 5. At the end of one year, he earned a total dividend of 30% on his investment. After one year, he reinvested the amount including the dividend in the ratio of 6 : 7 in the Debt and Equity Funds. If the amount reinvested in Equity Funds was ₹ 94,500, what was the original amount invested in Equity Funds?

(a) ₹ 75,000

(b) ₹ 81,000

(c) ₹ 60,000

(d) ₹ 65,000

(e) None of these

Answer: (a)

Let total number of employees in beginning = 8K and

Total number of employees in present = 7K

Let salary of an employee in beginning = 5l

and salary of an employee in present = 6l

Therefore, Total salary in beginning = 8K × 5l = 40Kl

Required ratio = 40 KI : 42 KI = 20 : 21

Clearly, salary is increased.

8 litres are drawn from a flask containing milk and then filled with water. The operation is performed 3 more times. The ratio of the quantity of milk left and total solution is . \(\displaystyle \frac{{81}}{{625}}\). How much milk the flask initially holds?

(a) 10 ltr

(b) 20 ltr

(c) 30 ltr

(d) 40 ltr

(e) None of these

Answer: (b)

Solution for the Ratio and Proportion question is,

Let initial quantity be Q, and final quantity be F

F = \(\displaystyle Q{{[1-\frac{8}{Q}]}^{4}}\)

\(\displaystyle \frac{{81}}{{625}}={{(1\frac{8}{Q})}^{4}}\)

\(\displaystyle \frac{2}{5}=1-\frac{8}{Q}\)

Q = 20
